Among its many gadget-side virtues, 2009 saw 3D technology moving from irritating… well, not so irritating. Of course, it’s only a matter of time before we find a device that will reach the goal without giving us a headache.

And now 3M, which has really entered the display technology lately, is launching a 3D panel that avoids glasses for the so-called conoscopy: the surface of the devices has a film with lenses on one side and prism structures on the other, which display the corresponding left and right parts of the image. Currently available in 9-inch and 2.8-inch LCD panels, the company would be preparing for mass production, so it will not be long before they appear on portable devices. Who knows? Maybe your dream of a 3D Gizmondo is not dead after all! After the break, take a closer look.

The Optical Systems department of 3M has developed a sequential optical 3D film for wearable devices, which, according to the company, allows real automatic stereoscopic 3D visualization on mobile phones, games and other portable devices without the need for glasses. It can also be easily integrated into backlight module assemblies.

The optical 3D film can be integrated into the backlight module. 3M said that the film requires only an LCD display and operates at a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

The installation of the backlight modules is almost identical to the existing systems, which allows easy integration in the installation phase. The standard optical film stack is replaced by a reflective film, an individual light guide and a 3D film. due to the use of directional backlighting, the left and right images are sequentially focused into the eyes of the viewer, which allows viewing in full resolution of the panel.
